Secretary-Treasurer's Report

Our Members Do Good in the World

As Union members, we are fortunate to enjoy the highest standards in wages, benefits and job security in the industries we serve.

We are proud of our achievements — after all, we’ve worked hard over generations to win them and keep them — but we won’t be truly satisfied until we achieve a society where no one goes hungry, everyone has affordable health care, and every person gets an adequate and reliable income in retirement.

In an age when cynicism gets confused with “cool,” Union members aren’t afraid to be idealists, which is why folks can see us taking active roles in a wide variety of charitable and social causes.

In the Summer 2017 issue of Voice of Action, we have coverage of UFCW 8 volunteers who participated in the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers on May 13. They showed up at six post offices across our jurisdiction to sort food donated by Postal Service customers and collected by letter carriers. The food was then distributed to local food banks for use by families in need.

UFCW 8-Golden State is proud to co-sponsor this annual event, partly because so many of us work in the food industry. We see firsthand how many shoppers are struggling to put food on the table for their families.

But this is not the only way our members volunteer to make our world a better place.

Across the nation, UFCW members build homes through Habitat for Humanity. We collect backpacks and shoes for schoolchildren. We teach adults how to read in programs sponsored by community libraries.

In California and other states, UFCW members are active supporters of charity events benefitting research and support services provided by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as well as Union scholarships.

One of our most successful annual events in California, organized entirely by UFCW 8 members and staff, benefits children with special needs across America and around the world.

These are just a few of the ways Union members, and especially UFCW members, give back to their communities and do good in the world.
