Save Mart, Lucky, and Food Maxx Negotiations Update – November 15, 2024

UFCW 8-Golden State, alongside Locals 5 and 648, continues to face unnecessary delays by the company as we work to negotiate a fair contract for members working at Save Mart, Lucky, and Food Maxx. After multiple rounds of negotiations, the company’s refusal to provide relevant and necessary information violates the National Labor Relations Act and is yet another tactic to stall progress.

Save Mart’s representatives have shown little urgency in providing meaningful proposals. Instead, we are met with company demands, including:

  • Efforts to eliminate critical clerk and meat cutter job protections.
  • Inadequate funding for healthcare.
  • Proposals to reduce full-time positions, undermining job security for long-standing employees.
  • Refusal to fortify retirement savings for our members who have dedicated years of service.
  • An insufficient wage offer, which would be delayed until next summer.

These proposals fail to recognize the dedication and essential role our members play in keeping the stores operational and serving the community.

These deliberate actions have forced the Locals to file Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). We are also considering dates and times for ULP Strike Authorization votes to show the company our members’ resolve.

Bargaining for the Food Maxx contract resumes next week. After these meetings, the Locals will determine the next steps and when strike authorization votes could be scheduled. Member unity and support are vital during this critical period.

We know this is a challenging time, and our members deserve a contract which reflects their value and sacrifices. Solidarity is our strength. Stay engaged, informed, and united. Together, we will send a clear message: our members demand respect, security, and fair compensation for their work.

Together, we will prove Solidarity Works!
