Rite Aid Bankruptcy Update: A Familiar Fight for Our Members

Rite Aid has once again filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, plunging thousands of UFCW members nationwide into another period of uncertainty about their jobs, their futures, and the company’s direction.

“This feels like déjà vu for our members at Rite Aid,” said Jacques Loveall, President of UFCW 8-Golden State. “They’ve already endured the company’s broken promises, mismanagement, and repeated setbacks. Now they’re forced to navigate more upheaval while continuing to serve their communities.”

UFCW 8-Golden State, along with our members, were notified of the company’s decision on Monday, May 5th. As we have done in the past, your Union is actively working with the UFCW International Union and our legal team to ensure that members’ rights and contractual protections are fully upheld throughout the bankruptcy proceedings. We are doing everything possible to safeguard jobs and benefits, including the possibility of exploring potential buyers, and providing direct assistance to members who are impacted by the closures.

We will ensure seniority rights are enforced and pursue severance language, PTO and any other financial remedies allowed through the bankruptcy process. We will also help members with unemployment benefits and connect them with other employment resources when stores begin to shut down.

“Our members have always been the backbone of Rite Aid. For decades they have exhibited hard work, loyalty and resilience. Although these events are deeply troubling, we once again are fully committed to navigating this latest challenge for our valued membership,” said President Loveall.

Members are encouraged to reach out to their Union Representative with questions, and we will continue to provide updates as developments occur. Members can sign up for text alerts by texting “UFCW8” to (888) 724-5088 to receive the latest updates.

Stay informed, stay united, and we will continue to prove Solidarity Works.
