Discussions with Safeway, Vons, and Albertsons this week have produced little to no movement by the company. Despite our repeated efforts to move the process forward, the company continues to drag its feet and show disregard for the workers who keep their stores operational. The company has rejected several proposals—offering neither a rationale nor a counteroffer and has yet to offer a comprehensive wage proposal.
We have been bargaining for months, our members have voted nearly unanimously to authorize a strike, and we’re done waiting. In response, UFCW 8-Golden State, together with UFCW Locals 5 and 648, has issued a deadline of midnight, Friday, July 25. Both ULP and Economic strike options remain on the table.
Additional bargaining dates are confirmed for July 23 and 24. While the Unions are available for more sessions next week, the company has yet to commit beyond those two days.
Our Union has received official strike sanction support from the UFCW International Union, the California Labor Federation, and local Central Labor Councils. This sends an unmistakable message: we are backed by the full strength of the labor movement throughout California and beyond.
We will be holding meetings with stewards and picket captains from the Grapevine in Southern California to the Oregon border, distributing strike materials and preparing for any outcome. Members have gathered throughout the week at all our offices to make strike signs and get ready.
The best way to avoid any fight is to be ready for one. Let’s be clear — our power comes from member unity. When we stand together and are prepared to act, we protect our future.

Las conversaciones mantenidas esta semana con Safeway, Vons y Albertsons no han dado lugar a ningún avance por parte de la empresa. A pesar de nuestros repetidos esfuerzos por hacer avanzar el proceso, la empresa sigue dando largas al asunto y mostrando su desprecio por los trabajadores que mantienen sus tiendas en funcionamiento. La empresa ha rechazado varias propuestas, sin ofrecer ninguna justificación ni contraoferta, y aún no ha presentado una propuesta salarial global.
Llevamos meses negociando, nuestros miembros han votado casi por unanimidad a favor de la huelga y ya no estamos dispuestos a esperar más. En respuesta, UFCW 8-Golden State, junto con los sindicatos locales 5 y 648 de UFCW, han fijado como fecha límite la medianoche del viernes 25 de julio. Sigue sobre la mesa la posibilidad de una huelga por prácticas laborales injustas y una huelga económica.
