UFCW 8-Golden State, together with our sisters and brothers in Locals 5 and 648, continues to fight for a contract which truly respects the hard work, dedication, and sacrifices our members make every day keeping Safeway and Vons stores running smoothly across Northern California.
Negotiations resumed today in Northern Calif. and continue tomorrow. Despite our bargaining team’s full readiness and repeated demands for information which the company is legally required to provide, the company continues to stonewall. This bad-faith behavior is no isolated incident — throughout Southern California and other UFCW locals nationwide, Safeway/Vons has forced our Union family into taking Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) and economic strike authorization votes and, in some regions, ULP strikes to hold the company accountable for breaking the law and failing to negotiate fairly.
It is clear Safeway/Vons would rather stall and disrespect its workforce than bargain responsibly. Let there be no confusion: failure to provide required information and refusal to engage in good-faith negotiations may soon require our Northern California locals to follow suit with ULP and economic strike authorization votes. The company’s actions this week will have a definitive impact on our next steps.
