Northern California Safeway and Vons Negotiations Underway

UFCW 8-Golden State, in solidarity with UFCW Locals 5 and 648, has begun negotiations on a new contract for members working at Safeway and Vons throughout Northern California and the Bay Area. Members have spoken loud and clear–securing meaningful wage increases, enhancing healthcare and retirement benefits, improving scheduling, and strengthening workplace safety are top priorities.

Our bargaining team is committed to achieving a contract which reflects the hard work and dedication members bring to their stores every day. With the cost of living continuing to rise, we are determined to achieve real improvements which provide stability for workers and their families.

This may be the first time going through the collective bargaining process for some members. Here’s a general overview:

Member-Driven Proposals: The Union builds proposals based on feedback from contract questionnaires completed by members. These responses shape the priorities we fight for at the bargaining table.

Back-and-Forth Negotiations: Both the Union and the company present proposals, making changes and counter offers with the goal of reaching a fair agreement to benefit workers.
Tentative Agreement: When both sides reach a preliminary deal, this “tentative agreement” is shared with members.
Member Review & Vote: Before a contract is final, members get the chance to review the proposed contract, ask questions, and vote on whether to accept the new contract. When ratified, the contract goes into effect, securing the wages, benefits, and protections negotiated.

This process is just beginning. As negotiations move forward, the strength and unity of our members will be critical to achieving success. Staying informed and engaged is key.

Speculation, misinformation, and rumors can run rampant during negotiations. Avoid the “rumor mill” and contact your District Union Representative with any questions or concerns.

Cuando se ratifica, el contrato entra en vigor, asegurando los salarios, beneficios y protecciones negociados.
