Two important days coming up this week, Workers Memorial Day and May Day
Updated On: Apr 29, 2020

We have two important days coming up this week. Both are worthy of our attention as Union members.

The first is International Workers’ Memorial Day on Tuesday, April 28. On this day, we pay our respects to all workers who have been injured, who have been sickened, or who lost their lives while on the job.

This day is especially meaningful this year, as thousands of front-line heroes in our industries have taken ill with the COVID-19 virus. Scores of them, including UFCW members, have lost their lives.

We honor all of our fallen heroes, just as we honor you for your service and courage. We remain committed to doing everything we can to keep you safe and healthy as this crisis plays out.

The second day is International Labor Day, commonly referred to as “May Day,” Friday, May 1st. This is when we celebrate the brave sisters and brothers of the Union movement — past, present and future — whose unity and determination won countless achievements such as the five-day work week, the eight-hour work day, paid sick days, equal pay and so much more.

May 1st is also the 14th anniversary of the merger of two great UFCW Unions, Locals 588 and 1288, creating UFCW 8-Golden State.

So, we hope you’ll take a moment on April 28 to reflect on those we have lost. And on May 1st, take a moment to let out a loud cheer for all of us, for all we have done and for all we will continue to do together.

Thank you for proving, every day of the year…

Solidarity Works!
