Solidarity Works

Save Mart/Lucky, FoodMaxx, and Maxx Value
Negotiations Update – August 17, 2019

Your Union bargaining team continued discussions with Save Mart this week, making additional progress. We have successfully resolved the issue of pension funding along with almost all other contract language issues.

It’s important to note, these discussions have included bargaining units for Save Mart, Lucky, Food Maxx, and Maxx Value in both Northern and Southern California.

The critical, remaining issue is addressing meaningful wage increases for our hard-working members.

Additional meetings are scheduled early next week to continue negotiations. In the meantime, remain united, support one another and together, we will prove … Solidarity Works!

Negotiations Update for Save Mart Members - July 31, 2019

Bargaining with Save Mart is ongoing this week. Among your Union’s top priorities are to maintain the integrity of your health care plan.

We have achieved all of our health and welfare improvement goals in the tentative agreement between UFCW 8-Golden State and Safeway / Vons.

We will not compromise or settle for anything less than those same health and welfare provisions with Save Mart. If and when it becomes necessary to seek authorization by the membership in order to achieve those goals, the UFCW International Union will sanction a strike.

In the meantime, we thank you for your continued patience and support of your Union in word and deed.
Always remember:

Solidarity Works!

Web site update regarding delay in distribution of Safeway / Vons ratification packets - July 25, 2019

The mailing of the Safeway / Vons ratification material has been temporarily postponed.

This delay is due to Save Mart’s reluctance to agree to the health care improvements agreed to by Safeway / Vons.

The health care plan requires at least two major companies to be in agreement before health care improvements can be implemented.

The details of the Safeway / Vons agreement will not be distributed until Save Mart agrees to the health care plan improvements.

We have additional bargaining sessions scheduled and we will keep you posted as developments unfold.

In the meantime, always stand strong with your Union, and remember:

Solidarity Works!

UFCW 8-Golden State reaches tentative agreement with Safeway
and Vons in Northern and Central California

We are very pleased to announce UFCW 8-Golden State has reached an excellent new tentative agreement with Safeway and Vons in Northern and Central California.

“At the bargaining table we were able to build on the key achievements of decades of Union Solidarity,” President Jacques Loveall said. “This contract is one of our best ever, a big ‘win”’ for Union members.”

The three-year agreement includes improved funding of pension benefits, enhanced health care benefits with no employee premiums, and meaningful wage increases, President Loveall said.

Details will not be released until members have had the opportunity to review and ratify the tentative agreement. These details will be explained to affected Safeway and Vons members at informational meetings and in a special edition of the Voice of Action magazine. This publication also will include a mail-in secret ballot so members can vote to ratify their new contract.

Ballots will be counted and results of the member vote will be released in mid-August.

Your Union strongly recommends a YES vote!

Meanwhile, negotiations are continuing between UFCW 8-Golden State and other Union-affiliated supermarket companies in the region, including Save Mart/Lucky/FoodMaxx/Maxx Value and Raley’s/Bel Air/Nob Hill/Food Source. UFCW 8-Golden State is also in negotiations, along with other UFCW Unions in Southern California, to reach agreements with grocery chains in that part of the state.

Stay tuned for further developments. In the meantime, stay strong, stand united and always remember: Solidarity Works!

Northern CA Retail Food Negotiations Update, July 12, 2019

The phone calls below were sent out to Save Mart and Safeway members on Friday, July 12, 2019.

Save Mart:

As negotiations have continued, progress with Save Mart has been more troublesome than expected on the critical issue of healthcare. Your employer, unfortunately, has been reluctant to reach a satisfactory agreement on your health care provisions.

In the mean time we have made significant progress negotiating with Safeway. Accordingly, we are now making every effort to complete bargaining with Safeway and next we will focus all of our efforts on finding a meeting of the minds with your employer.

Thank you for your continued patience, please coninute supporting your Union in word and deed.

Safeway:

From around the clock negotiations with Safeway and Vons, we have made significant breakthroughs in the bargaining process as it relates to reaching a settlement in pension funding, healthcare provisions, key contract language addressing compression associated with the increases in the minimum wage and we are now focused on discussing much deserved wage increases.

Thank you for your continued patience, please coninute supporting your Union in word and deed.

Solidarity Works!

Retail Food Negotiations Update, Northern California – June 16, 2019

We have made significant progress with Safeway/Vons reaching an agreement on several major aspects of the health and welfare provisions of the contract and continue to make meaningful progress in other areas of the contract.

Last week we had extensive meetings with Save Mart/Lucky/FoodMaxx/Maxx Value, including Kern County, which were slow but fruitful enough to warrant additional meeting dates  set for this week. Additional dates to continue negotiations with Raley’s/Bel Air/Nob Hill/Food Source are being confirmed.

Member solidarity plays a critical role in bargaining as we diligently work to come to agreements recognizing and compensating our members’ hard work and dedication.

Together, we are united in our determination to improve our members’ wages and protect health benefits, pensions and working conditions.

Working together, we will prove once again… Solidarity Works!

Retail Food Negotiation Update, Northern California – May 17, 2019

Healthcare was discussed extensively this week with the employers. Some progress was made in our language proposals with Safeway and Save Mart.

Additional meetings are scheduled with Safeway, Save Mart, and Raley’s through the end of the month.

“It’s imperative the employers recognize any agreement we reach must reward the dedication and hard work of our members. It’s their daily commitment which makes these companies successful,” said President Jacques Loveall.

Member solidarity plays a critical role in bargaining. We are determined to improve our members’ wages and protect their health benefits, pensions, and working conditions and we’re focused on achieving a contract our members will be proud to ratify.

Continue standing with your Union and together, we will prove:

Solidarity Works!

Northern California Retail Food Negotiations Update - May 3, 2019

Bargaining in Northern California continued with Save Mart and Raley’s this week. Meetings with Safeway have also taken place in recent weeks. We have made some limited progress, however, the process continues to move slowly.

We recently witnessed the strength of 31,000 Stop & Shop workers from five different UFCW locals across three New England states. They were able to demonstrate, when we stand together for a better contract, when we are determined and united in solidarity, WE ARE A POWERFUL FORCE.

“We are adamant, the companies’ successes are a direct result of the efforts by our hard-working members. Our members deserve meaningful wage increases, a secure retirement and comprehensive medical benefits,” said President Jacques Loveall.

The solidarity and continued resolve of our members working at Safeway, Save Mart and Raley’s makes a difference in these negotiations. Continue standing with your co-workers, remain united and together we’ll prove, once again ...

Solidarity Works!

Health care and wages at the center of bargaining

Your Union’s negotiating team has been bargaining with the major supermarket employers (Raley’s, Safeway and Save Mart) for new contracts to replace our previous agreements, which expired last October.

Negotiations with these companies have been inordinately slow as the employers grapple with our proposals.

We maintain our positions because our members’ expectations must be met in these negotiations. Accordingly, the two sides have made minor progress and momentum is slow.

Health care issues

A major issue at the bargaining table is health care.

Through the Health Care Partnership program, in which members are encouraged to take a more proactive role in their health and health care, we have become better health care consumers.

As a result, our members are healthier — and the health care fund is healthier, too, because we’ve been able to keep costs under control.

The fund has steadily built up its reserves, which can be directly attributed to the improved outcomes of health care services.

The next step

The next step in our comprehensive plan is to invest in primary-care health facilities to further improve the delivery and quality of care for members.

Currently, we are working to expand beyond the dental and eye-care services now offered directly to members in order to focus on primary-care medical centers, which are intended to provide more and better services at no cost to the membership.

We believe these next steps should be financed in part through the reserves we’ve built in the health care fund.

Of course, we would continue to maintain sufficient reserves in the health care fund to assure your future health care is protected.

At the same time, we are taking an increasingly aggressive stance toward the health care providers who in many cases overcharge for their services.

Wage increases key

We also believe our members are entitled to meaningful wage increases as a reward for your hard work.

We will keep you informed as these critical negotiations continue. In the meantime, always stand strong with your Union, and remember:

Solidarity Works!

Retail Food Negotiation Update, Northern California – February 11, 2019

Negotiations with Raley’s/Bel Air/Nob Hill, Safeway/Vons, and Save Mart/Lucky are proceeding slowly. Additional meetings are scheduled this month and we are committed to reaching an agreement which rewards the efforts and hard work of our members.

Contract protections remain in effect as we continue bargaining with management.

Something to keep in mind as negotiations progress, companies are constantly looking to reduce their costs to increase profits. To the company, workers are an expense.

Your Union represents your interests, and only your interests, at the bargaining table. We are focused on achieving the best possible contract for all members.

Solidarity also plays an important role in strengthening our member’s wages, health benefits, pension, and working conditions. Continue supporting your Union bargaining team in word and deed.

Together we will prove once again … Solidarity Works!

UFCW 8-Golden State and Raley’s Supermarkets have signed an agreement to extend the terms of current labor agreements, including those covering members working Nob Hill Foods and Food Source, at least through Nov. 13. This means Union members’ wage standards, benefits and workplace rules are protected through this stage of the negotiations.

After Nov. 13, the contract extension will continue on a day-to-day basis. Either side will be able to cancel the extension with seven days’ notice.

As we proceed with contract negotiations, UFCW 8-Golden State and two of the three major supermarket employers in Northern California — Safeway and Save Mart/Food Maxx/Lucky — have agreements to extend the terms of each of the current labor agreements at least through Nov. 13. This means Union members’ wage standards, benefits and workplace rules are protected through this stage of the negotiations with each separate employer.

After Nov. 13, the contract extension will continue on a day-to-day basis. Either side will be able to cancel the extension with seven days’ notice.

The same extension has been offered to Raley’s.  As further information becomes available, we will keep you informed.

UFCW 8 remains committed to negotiating a contract our members will be proud to ratify. In the meantime, stand strong and proud with your Union, and always remember:
