Stand Together: Southern California Negotiations

Southern CA Food 4 Less Negotiations Update – June 5, 2017

After several bargaining sessions in Southern California with Food 4 Less, we have made little progress on many of the major issues facing us in these negotiations.

As negotiations move forward, your current wages, along with all provisions of your contract, remain in full effect even after the contract expiration.
Remember, Food 4 Less is successful because of your hard work and you deserve a fair contract.

Continue standing together for a better contract with your Union and we will prove, Solidarity Works!

Southern CA Albertsons/Vons and Ralphs Pharmacist Negotiations Update – August 24, 2016

Bargaining resumed with your Companies on August 22. Throughout these negotiations your Union has maintained our goals of adequate staffing in the pharmacies, competitive wages for pharmacists and PICs and maintenance of medical and pension benefits.

Unfortunately, management does not share our concerns regarding adequate staffing and claim the pharmacies are not too busy and therefore it is not necessary to have more techs or pharmacy clerks available to assist the pharmacists.

We also remain apart on a fair and equitable wage increase for pharmacists and pharmacists in charge. Once again management claims Retail Food Store pharmacies cannot be compared to Drug Store pharmacies and therefore a lower wage is appropriate. Your Union does not agree and we are working diligently to close the gap. We understand your medical and pension benefits are top notch but your level of responsibility, liability, knowledge and education must also be properly compensated.

We will meet again with your Companies on September 13. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue to wear your stickers. If you need additional stickers, please contact your Representative. We are also surveying all pharmacists regarding the staffing issue. We need everyone's participation and ask you take a few minutes to discuss this issue when your Union Representative is in your store. Union Representatives will be bringing this survey to you within the next week or two.

Your Company's pharmacy business is profitable because of you. You deserve fair wage increases and working conditions. We are at a critical point in negotiations. Your solidarity and commitment will make the difference.

Remain united and together we’ll prove, once again, Solidarity Works!

Southern California UFCW Unions Reach
Tentative Agreement With Supermarkets

Members to vote on proposed contract at meetings on Aug. 8 and 9

Bakersfield, Calif. (Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016) — Seven Southern California local Unions of the United Food and Commercial Workers today reached a tentative agreement with Albertsons/Vons and Ralphs.

Members of UFCW 8-Golden State in Kern County are among approximately 47,000 supermarket workers who will be asked to vote on the proposed contract at meetings throughout the region on Aug. 8 and 9.

The Southern California UFCW members had been working without a contract since their previous agreement with the employers expired in March.

UFCW Southern CA Negotiations Update, July 22, 2016

Negotiations with Albertsons/Vons and Ralphs resumed this week. "Your Union remains determined to achieve the best possible agreement, meeting the needs of our members," said President Jacques Loveall, "The companies’ current proposals, however, continue to fall short of recognizing our members hard work and the companies' profitability."

Beginning Monday July 25th, consumer education actions will begin occurring throughout Southern California. Negotiations are scheduled to resume on in August 1. Be sure your mailing and contact information is up to date with your Union. We will keep you informed as additional information becomes available.

Over the next two weeks your continued support and solidarity are critical and can make a difference. No one wins in a strike, however, we know you deserve better.

Remain strong and together we will prove … Solidarity Works!

Southern CA Negotiations Update – July 18, 2016

Four and one half months after contract expiration, we are disappointed to report Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons have made little movement towards reaching a contract offer which provides living wages for all employees, affordable medical benefits, retirement security and fair scheduling.

Since March, negotiations have progressed slowly and it has become clear the companies would prefer to delay a settlement.

Last week, we met for several days with very little progress by the companies on any of the most important economic issues.  Additionally, we have meetings scheduled for this week and into August.

We have told the companies we have a deadline of August 8.  We know from past negotiations, without a deadline, the companies will continue to delay.  At the appropriate time, all local unions will schedule meetings to present and vote the companies' final offer.

In the meantime, we are doing everything possible to avoid a strike. We know this is a tense and difficult time for you and your co-workers, but it is also a time for standing strong in solidarity with your Union.

Our goal is to always negotiate a contract without the need for economic action.  No one ever wants a strike but the message management needs to hear is we are standing together!

If you have any questions please contact your District Union Representative.

Together we’ll prove, once again … Solidarity Works!

Southern CA Negotiations Update - June 22, 2016

In meeting halls across Southern California, UFCW Unions have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a potential strike against Albertsons, Pavilions, Ralphs and Vons.

This strike vote was critical to send the employers a clear message we mean business as we continue to meet at the bargaining table.

By standing together and flexing the strength of numbers, we will prove, yet again…

Solidarity Works!

Thank you for your continued support!

Southern CA Negotiations Update - Strike Vote Meetings June 20 & 21

The unions and companies met earlier this week, however little progress has been made. Additional meetings are scheduled over the next few weeks.

In response to the companies’ negotiating positions, Southern CA UFCW Locals have scheduled meetings to authorize economic action up to and including a strike, if necessary. Additional information will be available at the meetings scheduled for Monday, June 20, and Tuesday, June 21.

Members have been notified by mail the location and time for meetings in their area. Please make every effort to attend one of these important meetings. It's critical the companies understand the membership's resolve and determination to achieve a fair contract.

If you have any questions contact your District Union Representative in our Bakersfield office at (661)391-5770.

The bargaining committee thanks you for your continued support through these difficult negotiations.

Together we will prove, once again, Solidarity Works!

Southern California Negotiations Update – June 3, 2016

Negotiations between the Southern California UFCW Locals and the companies resumed this week. Three months have passed since the contracts expired and on June 2nd the companies finally presented their economic package.

"The company’s economic proposal disregards the needs of our members, ignoring the growing cost of living in Southern California," said President Jacques Loveall. "Their proposal does not give our hard working members due credit for the companies' record profits."

In addition to an inadequate wage proposal, the proposed benefit changes would drastically increase employee health care costs, potentially reduce benefits, and decimate our pension plan.

As a result, plans are being made for strike vote meetings to be held shortly. Additional plans are in the works to reach out to community partners and increase public support.

Please watch your mail for your additional information and contact your District Union Representative if you have any questions.

Continue standing together and remain united!

Together, we will prove, Solidarity Works!

Additional bargaining dates have been scheduled into June.

“Continued solidarity remains an important part of these negotiations,” said Jacques Loveall, president of UFCW 8-Golden State. “Wear your Union button and voice your support. Negotiations resumed last week in Southern California and we are committed to reaching the best possible agreement for our members. Contract talks are proceeding slowly and additional meetings are scheduled this month.

Remember, the current terms of the contract remain in effect as negotiations continue.

Right now it is critical your employer knows we are all standing together in solidarity. Continue doing your part by being vocal in your support of your co-workers and your Union.

Southern CA Retail Negotiations Update, April 6, 2016

The Unions and employers have worked out a solution to one of the pension funding issues holding up negotiations. This important development will strengthen our pension plan by increasing the employer contribution rate in reasonable amounts over the next several years. Proper funding of the pension to improve the funding status will continue to be a necessary part of any overall settlement.

Additional negotiations have been scheduled to address all of the important issues affecting our members. These negotiations will be an uphill battle, so it is critical for members to stay united and support your Union.

Please make sure your contact information is up to date with the Union so we can keep you informed as developments occur.  Ignore the rumor mill and contact your District Union Representative if you have any questions.

Together, we will prove, once again, Solidarity Works!
