It's Good To Be Aboard

It is an honor to be a part of the leadership team of UFCW 8- Golden State.

The officers and staff of the former 1288 are an integral component of this new Union led by Jacques Loveall.

For those of you who do not know me, the following provides a brief snapshot of my background:

My work in the Labor Movement began in 1972, when I worked on the presidential campaign of Sen. George McGovern. I was assigned to work at Frontlash, the AFL-CIO student and youth voter registration program.

I joined the UFCW in 1976, when I began working at Gemco. In 1979, I became a Union Representative for the UFCW International. One year later I joined UFCW 1288 as a Union Rep.

Over the years, I served in a number of positions at 1288, including Administrative Assistant to the president, Secretary Treasurer, Recorder and Executive Vice President of the Retail Division.

I serve as Political Director on the Fresno-Madera-Tulare-Kings Central Labor Council and on the Fresno Workforce Investment Board, which administers federal and state employment assistance funds coming into the region.

I have been married to my wife, Cathy, for 21 years and we have three children.

Underage Liquor and Tobacco Sales

The summer months are a time when many underage young men and women will make an especially concerted effort to buy alcohol.
It is also a time when police sting operations will be intensified to ensure that stores follow the law and card anyone whom they even remotely suspect of being underage.

The California Legislature has mandated that anyone who is caught selling alcohol to a minor must be charged with a criminal infraction.

Selling alcohol to a minor, whether intentional or not, can get you into a lot trouble and be costly. The district attorney has the option of requesting both a fine and jail time.

Management may fire you, even if you have a spotless record with no previous disciplinary actions.

Although the penalties are less severe for the sale of tobacco to a minor, you could still lose your job even with a clean work record.
Always card anyone you even remotely think may be under the legal age of 21. Always punch in the birth date that appears on the license. Check to make sure you have entered the correct date.

Don’t let a mistake or a careless attitude cost you your job and more!
