SENIOR EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The High Cost
Of 'Free-Timing'
Every day in workplaces across America, employers encourage their employees to work extra hours without pay. They dangle vague promises as if they were carrots in front of their workers’ noses — hopes of better hours or pay raises or maybe promotions.
The extra time does not guarantee promotions or anything else. In fact, employees who work for free are rarely promoted. Why should managers spoil a good thing?
In your Unionized workplace, “free-timing” is an explicit violation of the collective bargaining agreement.  It is also against the law. If a worker is caught engaging in this practice, he or she will be fired.
Employees who work “off the clock” may have good

intentions, but they do not understand the negative impact of their actions on their fellow Union members.
Members who choose to work “off the clock” don’t just take money out of their own pockets and risk their own jobs, they prevent other members from working and being paid for those hours.
    “Free-timing” means lost hours

contributions to the Health & Welfare fund, which means less funding for your family’s health benefits.
A member who “free-times” isn’t just “off the clock.” He’s off his rocker.
Don’t increase the company’s profits or your store manager’s yearly bonus by working “off the clock.” Give your employer a good day’s work for a good day’s pay.UFCW 8-Golden State
